Suga-T: Powerful & Poised

Suga-T
Suga-T

Suga-T, a legendary pioneer and unstoppable force in West Coast hip-hop, made an indelible mark alongside E-40 & The Click. Fierce, raw, relentless—she carved her own empire from the ground up. In this Q&A, she unleashes the truth—her battles, her grind, her legacy. No limits, no excuses—just the unapologetic, unfiltered story of Suga-T.

This coming Saturday November 29th, your brother, D-Shot, is hosting an event in Vacaville, CA, featuring The Click & Friends -- How exciting! So what all exactly can be expected? And for someone who has yet to witness you all live, what's in store for those folks?

The upcoming show will be a time where we will come together to do a lot of songs, and also our individual shows, which is a rare experience. Normally we just do a surprise feature on E-40 show, but we are now cranking up the brand to make sure our legacy is showcased and available for shows, appearances and more. We will also be performing for the first time as a group with an actual band.

What are some of your fondest, most stand-out moments / memories during your lengthy tenure in this thing called Hip Hop?

Being on Soul Train, and meeting Don Cornelius after watching him through my childhood and actually appearing on his show with my brother, E-40, singing "Sprinkle Me" and hearing that he allowed us on because of me, because he was not into hip-hop like that at that time.

That said, what are your future plans and / or goals for the 2026 season and beyond?

Launching more master courses, writing more books, making more music, doing more singing shows and releasing, being more serious about my TV show and broadcasts, and exposing more products.

Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?

I want people to get a relief, and a break from all the foolishness in the today's over-exploited music of violence, drugs, sex and music that don't give out healthy energy...but also to be clear, that it's not over for us more mature women, who are trailblazers in hip-hop, since the genre seems to try to make this a young woman's game. Which is a whole nother story, and why I just produced a documentary that gives the experience of this transition, and opened a museum to help hold my own history and others who are deserving of it, yet impacted by systemic antics.

On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of hip-hop?

I have a bittersweet feeling of the state of hip-hop, and it's too much to speak on right now.

What do you feel has and will continue to be the key to your longevity?

Staying healthy and woke, and not getting stuck in the celebrity space because it's so fake, while staying away from people who don't want me to win...along with staying authentic, consistent, growing skills, staying with the creator and having other things besides just music and entertainment business to offer. Also, taking breaks to get your mental balance is critical, I can't leave that out.

Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from entertainment?

Yes, my goal is to be a serial author; writing more books and building a stronger program for autism, while continuing to empower women and girls, along with community wellness. I'll also continue to support my lineage with matriarch endeavors enjoying my legacy.

Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?

In 5 or 10 years, I'll still be singing,  pushing health, ministry and continuing to operate my enterprise.

"Sprinkle Me" is a bonafide hip-hop classic — How did this particular selection come about? Who came up with its concept? And, please describe for me the overall studio vibe(s) on that fateful day?

"Sprinkle Me" was created starting from a phone call from my brother to get there and record. I got there and wrote my verses in 20 minutes and left to get back to my children, then next thing you know it was chosen as a single. The concept came from my old boyfriend, JB, may he rest in peace; he would always tell us to sprinkle him. My brother felt it was trendy, and we rocked it out; to this date it's well loved, and almost double platinum. The vibe was an unexplainable experience.

Any “parting” words for our readers?

Please follow my socials to stay connected, and please don't let the game take your soul or warp your reality...and thank you for staying with me all these years; 25 albums, and 40 years later.
