Muzikscribe: Let’s hop right into this latest entry, ‘Play’ — Tell me about this particular track; how did it actually come to fruition?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : My new song, 'Play,' is a reflection of my upbringing in a musical family, specifically drawing inspiration from the New Jack Swing era.
Muzikscribe: Play’ follows on the heels of ‘Chill With Me‘ — Talk to me a lil bit about this composition…
Melvin Edmonds Jr.: Chill With Me’ leads listeners to a more sensual experience. It will be rereleased in June 2024. My upcoming single “Play” will be releasing in May 2024. Stay tuned!
Muzikscribe: As a songwriter, when you sit down to pen your lyrics where do you draw inspiration from?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : My writing process is informed by everyday life experiences. Create art that’s relatable to today’s society.
Muzikscribe: Reflecting, tell me your whole inception into music -- When did you first become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for Melvin Edmonds, Jr.?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : Exposure to my family's musical talents from a young age sparked an instant passion for music within me. Despite facing challenges along the way, my journey ultimately evolved for the better over time.
Muzikscribe: Now you’re a native of Indianapolis, IN, by way of Atlanta, GA, correct? So growing up, who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : My journey began in Naptown, also known as Indiana. The experience was bittersweet, as I had primarily grown up in Los Angeles, California. Seeing more of the world made me realize that there was much beyond what my hometown could offer.
…My musical inspirations are deeply rooted in my family, with my father Melvin Edmonds Sr. and uncles Kevon and Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds playing a significant role, along with the incredible Jackson family and the late, great Prince.
Muzikscribe: In having said that, how do you classify your overall sound and / or style?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : My overall style is more like a pop with a twist of New Jack / R&B. I still have ways to go, but that’s that.
Muzikscribe: Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : I strive to create music that resonates with listeners on multiple levels, my art is all-encompassing and versatile.
Muzikscribe: If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : When it comes to collaborations in music, I believe that Prince is the ideal partner because of his remarkable eye for detail and outstanding vocal and stage presence.
Muzikscribe: If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : Madison Square Garden is a symbol of New York City's vibrancy, and having a personal connection to the city through my wife only enhances its allure.
Muzikscribe: On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of R&B?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : Being that I’m old school, this new R&B generation has its own creativity in its own way. That’s what makes them unique.
Muzikscribe: What do you feel has and will continue to be the key to your longevity?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : Staying true to myself, those around me. Remaining humble, persistent and never revealing manifestations until they’re completely in fruition.
Muzikscribe: Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : Music will always be a part of who I am. Outside of music; I would offer mentorship, and would be interested in brand partnerships, endorsements, etcetera.
Muzikscribe: To date, what has been your biggest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : The biggest moment in my career was connecting with my wife, Briana Edmonds. She’s played a huge role in my everyday life and business journey. She’s the missing piece of the puzzle I needed in my life. Together, we’ve accomplished so much within these past two years together.
Muzikscribe: What’s an average day like for you?

Melvin Edmonds Jr. : I appreciate each and every fan. Even the haters. Motivation goes hand in hand.
Muzikscribe: What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : My favorite part would be living in my truth everyday and doing what I love the most.
Muzikscribe: What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : Remain consistent. Hard work pays off.
Muzikscribe: Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : 5-10 years from now, I see myself on top of the world literally. Anything is possible. If you can envision it you can make it happen. Stay consistent, trust God and what the universe has for you.
Muzikscribe: As for the immediate, what's next for you, Melvin?
Melvin Edmonds Jr. : This summer will bring new music to enjoy, keep an eye out!
