DEEANN: No Turning Back

DeeAnn | Kiss of Life
DeeAnn | Kiss of Life

Following the success of last year’s breakthrough single, “Stay Here With Me,” multi-faceted singer-songwriter DeeAnn, née DiMeo, has returned with “Kiss of Life” the next offering from her soon-to-be unleashed, still untitled, full-length body of work.

Let’s hop into this selection, “KISS OF LIFE,” your tribute to Sade — Tell me about this particular track; how did it come to fruition?

I love Sade’s music. When we were picking music for the album, I chose this particular song from her discography because of its beautiful melody, as well as the lyrics, which can have deep meaning spiritually and metaphorically. Our loved ones who left us, our angels, may be helping us as we search for our peace and joy. Or, the lyrics may be hinting that our special love is nearby, and we need to stay strong in our faith.

Of course, “KISS OF LIFE” follows on the heels of “Simply Beautiful” — Talk to me a lil bit about this composition…

“Simply Beautiful,” by Al Green, is a sultry, sexy beautiful song that takes you to a peaceful calm place. I love singing it. It’s a slow burning, baby making song. It’s just like its title, “Simply Beautiful.”

How then do both selections either differ and / or compare to previous DEEANN entries?

Life happens, and we change from our experiences. Losing my son a few years ago has changed me forever. I sing from a much deeper level now, and there is no turning back.

As a songwriter when you sit down to pen your lyrics, where do you draw inspiration from?

My own life experiences, and other people’s stories. Just having a conversation with someone, watching a movie, waking up in the middle of the night, etcetera, thoughts and ideas come to fruition. I need to write and / or record them immediately, so I don’t forget my ideas.

Tell me your whole inception into music — When did you first become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for you, DEEANN?

I was 7 years old when I knew I wanted to be a singer. I was involved in music all throughout my school years, and I went on the road with a dance band right after I graduated. I fell in love with Jazz, Soul and Blues after I had my children. Jazz music goes outside the box with spontaneity and creativity. You have more freedom to sing or play in a non-structured way. I never seem to sing the same song twice in the same way. I’m always changing it depending on who I am working with, where I am emotionally, how the crowd is responding, what venue we are performing at, and so on.

Now you’re originally from Buffalo, New York, correct? So, growing up in ‘The Queen City,’ who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?

I was born and raised in Niagara Falls, NY. I have lived near Buffalo for many years. My father was my first musical influence. He was my favorite Jazz singer of all time. He sang everyday around the house while I was growing up. He turned me onto Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Ella, Billie Holiday…and my mom introduced me to Barbra Streisand and Carole King. Our local legends; like Dodo Greene, Rick James, Ani DiFranco, Tommy Tedesco, just to name a few, were also a huge inspiration.

That said, how do you describe and / or define the style of music that you create and / or perform?

I am not really categorized in one genre. I loved singing Rock, Pop & Country music for several years. I even sang church music, getting hired for weddings and funerals. I would have to say my heart is mainly in the jazzy Soul, R&B, Blues style. I need to feel the music from deep within my soul, and Jazz / Soul can do that for me.

Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?

Good question. Recently, I sang for a children’s cancer fundraiser event and the responses of, “you make me feel so calm and peaceful,” “I love your voice, it moves me, please never stop singing,” are a huge part of why I keep singing. God gifted me with a voice; I work on honing and practicing my skills, and people are moved. What better gift can I ask for than to give that to my fans, and enjoy it myself.

If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Luther Vandross…his tone, his soul, his phrasing. I’m in heaven when I listen to him sing.

If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?

Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. It is one of the most beautiful theatres in the world.

On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of music?

Music and technology are constantly growing, which makes it possible to create with musicians all over the world from your own house. Social media gets your music heard in a heartbeat. But, my favorite way to make music is still live in the studio with musicians, and connecting with each other spiritually and creatively right there in the moment.

What do you feel has and will continue to be the key to your longevity?

Being honest and true to who you are as an artist. Work hard, stay focused, and take care of yourself.

Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?

Yes, continuing to draw closer to God and learn his word.

To date, what has been your biggest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?

I think it would be opening up for George Jones when I was singing Country music. He was so kind to me, and I was honored to open up for the King of Country music.

What’s an average day like for you?

First thing I do when I wake up is pray and thank God for another day. I get a walk and / or workout done. I get on the computer and market my music, and get ready for the next interview or gig. Always practicing my music. I also spend time in nature as much as possible, and make time for my family.

Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans...

I love talking to my fans. They are a huge reason why I keep singing. Their words and actions keep my music alive. I sing at a weekly Jazz luncheon show at Sportsmen’s in Buffalo, and I am able to communicate with many fans who become like family to me.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

My favorite part is singing and entertaining because it takes me to a different space; one of peace, calm, and joy. My least favorite is probably trying to keep up with social media because it can take time away from my creativity as an artist.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Follow your dream. Stay true to yourself. Educate yourself in the music business. Your talent is a given. Your hard work, drive and passion is what keeps you going, especially when rejection comes, which is inevitable.

Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?

God willing…I will be singing in bigger venues around the world, writing more songs and counting my blessings for each day.

As for the immediate, what's next for DEEANN?

I’m working on my new album with my producer Ted Perlman. I am also working on a video for my new single, “Kiss of Life.”

Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention?

Yes, I am grateful for my producer, Ted Perlman, and my publicist, Tom Estey, and to my fans for their love and support. Most importantly, I am grateful for my faith in God that keeps me going every day.

Lastly, any “parting” words for our readers?

Everyone and everything change, except for God’s Love.
