Formed in the beginning of the nineties at ‘The Mecca,’ a private, historically black, university located in Washington, D.C., Shai, then comprised of Carl "Groove" Martin, Darnell Van Rensalier, Marc Gay and (lastly) Garfield Bright, literally hit pay dirt with the release of their outstanding premiere offering, “If I Ever Fall in Love,” an a cappella number, and its equally impressive “Grooves Bedroom Mix” version.
Initially signing with indie imprint Big Boy Records, where Southern Hip Hop veteran rapper-songwriter-producer Fiend, née Richard Jones, would soon reveal his ‘95 debut LP, I Won't Be Denied. Shortly thereafter, the self-proclaimed International Jones, who was raised in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans' 17th Ward, found himself aligning with Master P's No Limit Records. After a stand-out appearance on P's anthem-like hit single, "Make 'Em Say Uhh!,"
Having worked with some of the biggest artists - the late, great Michael Jackson, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Gwen Stefani, to name some - in the world, five-time GRAMMY-nominated Senegalese-American singer-songwriter, Akon [“Locked Up” "Lonely"], who has famously introduced the masses to mega stars like Lady Gaga, T-Pain, Wizkid and Davido, adds yet another name, Sheesh, to his already extremely impressive résumé through his newly rebranded imprint, Konvict Kulture.
