Shop Talk w/OG Parker

OG Parker
OG Parker

Having already logged in a string of smash hit entries for the likes of Migos, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Jazmine Sullivan, Muni Long and Summer Walker, among others, multi-platinum, 8X Grammy nominated record producer OG PARKER, née Joshua Isaih Parker, unleashes his very own, not to mention quite impressive, 5-track debut offering, Moments.

Let’s hop right into these singles, “No Fuss, ” featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR and “Rain Down, ” with Chris Brown, Latto, Layton Greene, and the late PnB Rock — Tell me about these particular compositions; how did they even come to fruition?

These were tracks I originally produced with the artists in the studio that didn’t end up making their albums for whatever reason. I recognized how amazing the songs were and decided to put them on my album.

Of course “No Fuss” and “Rain Down, ” come courtesy of your EP , MOMENTS — Conceptually, what does this title represent both to and for you?

These songs represent the current sound of R&B. They blend timeless classics with modern sounds, and conceptually I believe they are standout tracks in today's male R&B.

How then does MOMENTS either differ from and/or compare to previous OG Parker selections?

MOMENTS is special because it’s my first album. I was inspired by legends like DJ Khaled, Metro Boomin, and DJ Mustard. I knew I could create one of the best and most concise albums of the year. It’s a fun listen and the perfect length.

As a producer, you’ve already worked with top-tier talent like Megan Thee Stallion, Summer Walker, Muni Long, and Migos — Take me through a typical studio session.

Every session is different and special in its own way. Each artist brings unique approaches and vibes. One thing that's always clear is the talent that got them to the point of superstardom.

Do you have a favorite — thus far — from those that you’ve collaborated with?

Every studio session holds meaning to me. I thank God every day for the opportunity. While I don’t have a favorite collaboration, I value the close relationships with artists like Chris Brown, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and DDG beyond just music. It means a lot to be able to call them friends.

Anybody else on your wish list, futuristically speaking?

I’d love to work with upper-echelon acts like Drake, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Morgan Wallen, and Post Malone. I believe the next phase of my career involves contributing to these legendary catalogs and creating timeless music.

Tell me about your whole inception into music — When did you first become interested in it, and how did it all begin for OG Parker?

I’ve always loved music. I come from a musical family. My grandfather taught as a music professor at Morehouse College, and my mother was a child actor alongside Morgan Freeman in ‘Rolling Thunder Hear My Cry.’ My formal entry into the music industry really began after joining OG Maco’s OGG collective and working with him as one of his primary producers, especially during his inception into Quality Control Music.

Now you’re from Fayetteville, Georgia, correct? So growing up in ‘Fayettenam, ’ who all else did you consider to be your strongest musical influences?

“Fayettenam* is hilarious! I’m originally from East Point, GA. I lived in Southwest Atlanta and Colleyville-Grapevine, TX, until middle school when I moved to Fayetteville. Growing up in such an influential area was life-changing. From acts like Usher, OutKast, Dallas Austin, and Babyface to Timbaland, Pharrell, and more; I wouldn’t trade growing up here for anything.

In having said that, how do you classify your overall sound and/or style?

I’m one of a kind. I don’t have a specific style — think of me as the ultimate Swiss Army knife. I can produce any genre.

Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?

I just want people to feel something every time they hear my music.

If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and if why?

Drake, because he’s my favorite artist. Me and Whitney Houston would’ve done some serious damage in the studio, too. RIP to the true Queen!

If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?

Madison Square Garden. It’s the ultimate pinnacle of success.

On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of Hip Hop?

Yes, I believe Hip Hop is in an amazing space. There are so many sub-genres and cultures contributing to this ecosystem, making it the most influential art form in the world.

What do you feel has been and will continue to be the key to your longevity?

I’m always willing to learn and collaborate, and I strongly believe in being honest and having integrity. Keeping God first is also essential — you can’t go wrong with that.

Do you have any other outside aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?

Yes, I’m very into fashion, and I’m launching my clothing brand called “7even.” The number 7 is powerful and inspirational — it’s God’s number, and I have it tatted on me. Beyond that, I plan to diversify my portfolio through real estate investments and community rebuilding.

Moments
Moments

To date, what has been your biggest career moment(s)?

Each moment has been monumental in its own way. I thank God for the opportunity to serve my family, friends, and the people. My greatest moments come from seeing the genuine reactions and love to the music I’ve helped create.

What’s an average day like for you?

I live in the studio. When I’m not there or with my family, I’m probably playing Call of Duty.

Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans.

I love interacting with fans. I’ve never had any bad experiences, and it’s all love. It’s a blessing to be recognized for my talents.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite?

My favorite part is the opportunity to travel the world and live a comfortable life while sharing these experiences with others. My least favorite is the current pay structure in the industry, especially for producers. The industry is like the wild wild west at times, but I’m looking forward to a better system.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Faith in God and persistence are key. You have to be obsessed and delusional about your success to reach the top. Nobody will believe in you until you do, and you’ve got to show up and show out consistently.

Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?

I see myself as a husband, father, and man of God. I’ll be one of the best producers in history, impacting my community and creating opportunities for future creatives.

As for the immediate, what's next for OG Parker?

2024 has been great so far — I’ve produced over 20 records and released my first project. Now, I’m focused on launching my clothing brand and developing my first studio album. I’m also serious about my label, Neutral Records. We’ve dropped our first project with Imani Williams, and I can’t wait to continue growing as a CEO and music executive.

Is there anything I left out or just forgot to mention?

Make sure to follow me on all platforms: @ogxparker, @neutralrecords, and @7evenshop.

Lastly, any “parting” words for our readers?

Just keep God first and treat people right — everything else will fall in line.
