Singer-Rapper-Songwriter KAYNE THE LOVECHILD is Fearless. Authentic. And even Revolutionary. The Bronx, New York native’s unique and diverse sound is a perfect blend of Soul, R&B and Hip Hop, but even more importantly speaking, it’s ALL his very own, and unapologetically so.
KTLC is not just an entertainer, he is an experience.
Let’s hop right into these singles, “We Outside Remixes,” produced by Until Dawn and John "J-C" Carr — Tell me about these particular tracks; how did they actually come to fruition?
These remixes came unplanned. The DJs heard the record, and immediately did their spin on it. I love that it gives a new way to listen to the song, but still puts you on your feet.
Of course “We Outside Remixes” follow on the heels of “Banjee Girls” — Talk to me ‘bout this song...
“Banjee Girls” came from a literal night outside! The night was filled with beautiful people, and the vibes were unmatched. The energy of that evening drove me to get in the studio and create a masterpiece!
As a songwriter, when you sit down to pen your lyrics, where do you draw inspiration from?
For me, personally, inspiration can come from ANYWHERE.
Reflecting, tell me your whole inception into music -- When did you first become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for KAYNE THE LOVECHILD?
I came from a very musically inclined family. My pops was a percussionist, and my mom is an awesome singer! You put those two together and you get...a FABULOUS me! I began my journey singing in parks with my friends and at recess. I would always be the one to get called out at the family function! At all the cookouts, I would sing and everyone would generously give me money.
Now you’re a native of The Bronx, NY, correct? And growing up in ‘the Boogie-Down,’ who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?
Yes, to be honest, besides from my parents who were the definition of a music-head to me, the Bronx was very impactful upon my artistry and became my biggest influence. I was affected by a lot of the cultural music I heard on a daily basis just walking around. It comes full circle because I’m still being influenced by the Boogie Down heavily till this day! I stay involved with organizations like Destination Tomorrow, doing amazing work in the community and the people there push my music to new heights! You can even catch me at Bronx Pride Day next month, GOING CRAZY with the real Banjee Girls!
Having said that, how do you classify your overall sound and / or style?
I don’t like to categorize myself under one specific genre or style because that forces you in a box. One thing for certain is that my music is all soul driven. I promise you that! Nobody out right now looks like me, sounds like me and is blending the flavors of the ‘hood with Pop and R&B the way I do! Nonetheless, my music is for all but powered by my queerness. Just like the sound I create, I refuse to let my sexual orientation put me in a box either in this industry.
Switching gears here, what exactly do you want people to get from your music?
I want people to feel. Whether you love it or not. The world is becoming desensitized and not connecting to music as they once did. If I can make someone feel anything, then my job has been completed!
If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
There are three: Amy Winehouse, Beyoncé and Lauryn Hill. Simply because of the genuine soul they all possess in their voice.
If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?
It wouldn’t be a venue necessarily, but the Made In America Festival is my top choice! It’s all revolved around the theme of living the REAL American dream.
On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of music?
Hmmmmmm...I’m happy with everyone being so creative. Let’s just keep it to that...LOL!
What do you feel has and will continue to be the key to your longevity?
Leading with love is my number one rule. With a message of love, you can’t go wrong! Undoubtedly, when you’re rooted in it.
Do you have any other outside / additional (future) aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?
Yes! I would definitely like to get into cut and sew fashion!!!!
To date, what has been your biggest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?
My journey is still evolving and a lot has happened that I can’t share as of yet! However, getting the chance to create wholeheartedly with talents like Kevin Aviance, make FAB music videos and opening up for Billy Porter at Miami Pride has been incredible. I feel so thankful, blessed and loved!
What’s an average day like for you?
Contrary to popular belief, I’m actually a homebody! I like to be in the crib and be with my two boys; Allah and Salaam. They’re my two pocket bulldogs. I enjoy waking and baking in the AM, devising a plan and executing it all before my night begins.
Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans...
I don’t like the word fans. It makes the interaction seem too transactional. But I definitely interact with my LOVEBUGGGS. They are nuts. But so am I, which is why we go together real bad. They keep me going. So at shows and when I see them out it’s always a good ki ki.
What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?
My favorite part is definitely making people smile. My least favorite, the fake sh*t.
What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t. I go through what I have to, so you can follow your own.
Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?
I definitely see myself touching a lot of different parts of the globe. Expanding my ideology of love all over the world! Meeting some of the people who inspire me. And most of all, bettering myself in all aspects.
As for the immediate, what's next for KTLC?
Next stop is WORLD DOMINATION!
Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention?
Oh, we covered allll the things!
Lastly, any “parting” words for our readers?
Dear Lovebugs, Never forget to love yourself!
